A simple routine for a better-kept car
Consistent care protects your vehicle, keeps it enjoyable to drive, and can prevent small problems from becoming expensive ones. You do not need a shelf full of products. Start with the right basics, use them correctly, and work carefully.
1. Begin with the wheels
Wheels and tyres usually hold the heaviest dirt. Clean them before the body so grime is less likely to splash onto freshly washed paint. Use separate brushes and cloths for wheels, and always follow the cleaner's instructions.
2. Rinse before washing
Rinse away loose dust, grit, and mud before touching the paint. Work from the top down and pay attention to wheel arches, lower panels, and other areas where dirt collects.
3. Wash gently
Use a suitable car shampoo and a clean wash mitt. Clean one section at a time from top to bottom, leaving the dirtiest lower panels until last. Rinse your mitt frequently and avoid household detergents, which can be too harsh for automotive finishes.
4. Dry properly
Dry the vehicle with a clean, soft automotive drying towel to reduce water spots. Pat or glide the towel gently rather than applying heavy pressure. Do not let wash water dry naturally in strong sunlight.
5. Protect the finish
Apply a suitable wax, sealant, or protective product to clean, dry paint, following its directions carefully. Protection can improve gloss and make routine cleaning easier, but more product is not always better.
6. Care for the interior
Vacuum first, then clean surfaces with products intended for their material. Test any new cleaner on a small, hidden area. Apply products to a cloth when possible rather than spraying directly near screens, switches, or perforated surfaces.
7. Finish with glass and details
Clean glass with a fresh, lint-free cloth. Inspect door shuts, badges, grilles, and trim for trapped water or residue. Use separate cloths for glass, paint, wheels, and interior work to avoid transferring dirt or chemicals.
Good habits that protect your car
- Work on a cool surface and, where possible, out of direct sunlight.
- Read the product label before use and never mix chemicals.
- Wear suitable protection and keep products away from children and pets.
- Test unfamiliar products on an inconspicuous area first.
- Wash cloths and applicators separately, then let them dry fully before storage.
- If a surface is damaged, delicate, or unfamiliar, seek professional advice before treatment.
